A person who spiked sweets with tranquilliser and provided them to minors at a youth camp in the area has confessed to sexual offences against two young males aged between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was detained after eight children and one adult fell ill at the facility in mid-summer.

The elderly man, from the Nottinghamshire area, confessed to a total of 17 charges when he was present at the courthouse on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he disputed one particular crime he was facing, which was concerning a nine-year-old child.

The accused was remanded in custody prior to a additional proceeding on 28 November.

'Sweet game'

Mary Prior KC, handling the case, detailed the criminal behavior to the judicial body.

She stated his those affected were children from difficult backgrounds who were participating in a youth camp which he operated.

Ruben played a "sweet game" with the children, the legal counsel stated, in which he would enter the boys' rooms when they were getting ready for bed and request they to consume candy "as fast as possible".

She stated to the judge the man had conducted this practice with the boys "repeatedly", and youngsters had earlier experienced illness the following morning.

She said the defendant had been successful in rationalizing this for many years as the youngsters being "overexcited from fun", until his stepson had suspicions in summer 2025.

The legal representative added: "In the summer" his stepchild had suspicions about the activities, with valid cause.

"They chose" to examine in the defendant's belongings."

The legal counsel stated materials including baby oil, Vaseline and medical needles were discovered, and his stepson contacted the authorities about his worries.

She explained the man continued to play the "sweet game" with six children that night - that Saturday - and they were all sick the following morning.

"The police had not responded by that stage," she continued.

The oversight body, the investigative body, had stated that it was examining law enforcement's management of the situation.

Mrs Prior said the minors were unable to walk properly due to being ill, so the stepson contacted the authorities again.

She explained the man then played the "candy game" in a area of five minors.
