Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the massive storm triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers have found that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week due to the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
