The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to block the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in federal court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
